A deal desk is the review step that sits between a rep negotiating a deal and that deal actually getting signed. Anything that falls outside the standard price list - a custom discount, a non-standard payment term, a contract clause legal hasn't blessed before - routes through the deal desk before it goes out the door.
The main reason it exists is clarity, not margin protection. Without a deal desk, a rep hits a non-standard request and has no defined path forward - no one they know to ping, no sense of what's actually approvable, no timeline for getting an answer. The deal doesn't stall because the customer said no; it stalls because the rep spent two weeks pinging four different people trying to figure out who could even make the call.
It also exists because individual reps, left alone, might choose to optimize for closing the deal in front of them, not for what's good for the business across all deals. A 30% discount might make sense to hit this quarter's number for this one account. Multiply that by every rep making the same call independently, with no visibility into what anyone else approved, and margin erodes in a way nobody decided on purpose.
What actually runs through a deal desk varies by company, but it usually covers discount thresholds above a set percentage, non-standard contract terms (payment schedules, liability caps, unusual SLAs), multi-year or multi-product bundles that need pricing coordination, and anything that needs sign-off from finance or legal before a signature is binding. The desk isn't necessarily a room or even a dedicated team - at a lot of companies it's a defined approval workflow inside the CRM, with clear thresholds for who needs to sign off on what.
Early-stage startups usually skip this, and for a while that's fine - when there are five deals a month and the founder is in every one, informal review is the deal desk. The point it starts to matter is when deal volume outpaces what one person can eyeball, or when a rep closes something that finance finds out about after the fact instead of before.
If your team's current process for a non-standard deal is a Slack message and a shrug, that's the exact gap our RevOps & Sales Enablement work is meant to close.
