RevOps vs. Sales Ops: What's the Difference?

Revenue Operations builds the infrastructure the whole lead-to-customer cycle runs on: the CRM is set up correctly, the automations connecting each stage fire, comp plans and quotas are defined and consistent, and non-standard deals route through a proper deal desk instead of a rep's private judgment call. It's foundational, system-level work - get it wrong and every team downstream inherits the mess.

Sales Operations is the glue layer that sits on top of that foundation. It's less about building systems and more about keeping the sales team in sync with everyone it depends on: writing the playbooks reps follow, running forecasting sessions with Finance, briefing Marketing on what collateral is landing in deals, working with Data to find and fix where the sales flow is leaking, and telling Product what's blocking deals from closing so it can get prioritized.

In a nutshell: RevOps builds the foundation for the whole lead → customer → repeat-customer cycle. Sales Ops optimizes how the sales team itself operates and collaborates with everyone around it.

The two get blurred because they both touch the same CRM and the same pipeline, but they fail in different ways. Broken RevOps shows up as bad data - a comp plan nobody can reconcile, an automation silently dropping leads, a discount that went out with no record of who approved it. Broken Sales Ops shows up as friction - reps improvising because there's no playbook, a forecast that's really just a guess because Finance was never looped in, or a stalled deal because Product never heard it needed a specific feature to close.

Small teams usually run both out of one person, and that's fine early on - there's only one system to configure and one sales team to support. The split starts to matter once the CRM is complex enough to need dedicated ownership and the sales team is big enough that keeping it aligned with four other departments is a full-time job on its own.

If your CRM is a mess and your reps are improvising their own process because there's no playbook to follow, that's the exact gap our RevOps & Sales Enablement work is meant to close.
