What Is a GTM Audit, and When Do You Need One?

A GTM audit is diagnostic work, not a redesign. You already have a go-to-market motion running - a funnel, a message, a set of channels, a sales process. The audit's only job is to find out which specific part of that machine is actually broken before anyone touches a single dial.
That order matters, because the default response to underperformance is usually the opposite: pipeline's soft, so someone rewrites the landing page. Or launches a new outbound sequence. Or hires another SDR. Each of those is a bet made without ever confirming where the leak is - and if the real problem was messaging that doesn't match what buyers actually care about, a new landing page just repeats the same mistake with better design.
A proper audit works through the machine gauge by gauge.
Funnel - where are prospects actually dropping off, and is that consistent across segments or concentrated in one?
Messaging - does what you're saying match what your ideal customer actually cares about, or what the founding team assumes they care about?
Channels - which ones are producing pipeline versus just activity?
Tooling - is the CRM capturing the data you'd need to answer any of these questions in the first place?
Pipeline - where do deals stall, and for how long, before they go quiet?
Lead gen - is the volume problem upstream, or is enough coming in and the rest of the machine is what's wasting it?
You need a GTM audit when the usual signals show up together: pipeline growth has flattened despite the team staying just as busy, CAC is drifting up without a clear cause, or sales and marketing each have a confident, contradictory explanation for why deals aren't closing. It's also the natural next step once a company moves from pre-launch GTM strategy into actually being in-market - the plan that made sense on paper always needs to be checked against what real buyers are doing with it.
If your team's answer to slowing pipeline is always a new tactic instead of a diagnosis, that's the exact gap our GTM Strategy Audit & Upgrade work is meant to close.
